Nearly
one in four of California’s seniors are covered by Medi-Cal, the
state’s version of Medicaid. Medi-Cal provides many of the state’s
poorest seniors with vital health insurance coverage, including
wrap-around coverage for medical services Medicare does not cover.
It also provides a safety net for seniors requiring long-term care
who have exhausted their own financial resources. As of January
2003, there were nearly 764,000 people age 65 and older enrolled in
Medi-Cal.
Medi-Cal / Medi-Caid
The average cost of nursing home care, according to AARP is
almost $5,000 a month, and costs can soar to more than $20,000 a
month when special care is needed. Many older adults and their
family members create living trusts and/or obtain long-term care or
supplementary insurance policies to protect themselves from high
costs of nursing home care. They mistakenly believe that these
measures, plus Medicare, will suffice. They are unaware of the fact
that the HMO, Medicare and supplemental policy will provide only a
minimum of coverage to transition the family member from acute
(hospital) to sub-acute and/or nursing care. Medi-Cal/Medicaid can
provide extensive and comprehensive benefits for long term nursing
home care and the elderly do not have to be impoverished to receive
these benefits to which they are entitled.
